Getting into Medi-Cal transportation in California? The vehicle you buy decides who you can legally carry.
California separates non-medical transportation (NMT), for members who can walk, from non-emergency medical transport (NEMT), a prescribed medical level of service that breaks into wheelchair van, litter van, and ambulance. We have spent 20+ years clearing the path in all 50 states, and we'll do it for you.
Wheelchair vans in California
Under Medi-Cal standards, a wheelchair van must fit at least two standard-sized wheelchairs, include an additional wheelchair-accessible emergency exit, and carry a lift or ramp rated for at least 450 pounds that is secured to the vehicle, with staff trained to load and secure safely.
Litter (gurney) vans and driver documents
A litter van needs a loading entrance sized for a standard gurney, a second emergency exit that also fits a gurney, gurney fasteners that hold in a sudden movement or overturn, and washable seat coverings, and it generally requires two loading entrances plus a certified driver and an attendant. Drivers need a California license, DMV driving history, First Aid and CPR, drug and alcohol testing, and the MCSA-5875 and MCSA-5876 medical forms.

Key takeaway: In California, match the vehicle to the rider, confirm NEMT versus NMT, and meet the Medi-Cal wheelchair van and litter van standards before you buy.
