NPI Practice Location vs. Mailing Address: Why a Mailbox Gets Rejected

One wrong address field can stall your NPI — and everything downstream that depends on it.

The federal NPPES registry treats your practice location and your mailing address as two different things, with strict rules for each. Here's how to get them right.

Your practice location must be physical

NPPES requires your practice location to be a real, physical, staffed address. PO boxes and commercial mail-receiving addresses, like a UPS Store mailbox, are not accepted there, and your application will be kicked back if you use one.

Use a mailbox only for mailing

You can keep a PO box or virtual mailbox — just list it as your mailing address, not your practice location. That keeps your correspondence where you want it without tripping the practice-location rule.

The one home-based exception

A recent CMS change allows a mailbox as a practice location, but only for individual practitioners who work solely from home and have no other physical location. Organizations are not covered. Confirm the current NPPES rules before you submit.
