GIVING FAMILY CAREGIVERS A BREAK WHILE ENSURING SAFE, COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES OR MEDICAL NEEDS

Respite Care Services in Wyoming provide temporary relief for primary caregivers of individuals who require supervision or hands-on assistance due to age, disability, or chronic medical conditions. These services ensure continuity of care in a safe and supportive environment—at home or in the community—while giving family members time to rest, manage personal responsibilities, or prevent burnout. Respite care is covered under several Wyoming Medicaid waiver programs, including the Community Choices Waiver (CCW), the Comprehensive and Supports Waivers (for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities), and through EPSDT for medically necessary care in children under 21.

2. RESPITE CARE SERVICES OVERVIEW

Respite care provides short-term supervision or direct support to individuals in the absence of their regular caregiver. It may be provided at home, in a community-based setting, or—if allowed—in licensed facilities.

Covered respite services may include:

  • Supervision and personal care assistance in the home

  • Community-based outings and activities

  • Basic ADL/IADL support (bathing, eating, dressing, etc.)

  • Overnight, hourly, or weekend coverage

  • 24-hour care in emergencies or planned extended breaks

  • Age-appropriate care for children with disabilities

Respite services must be tied to caregiver relief, not ongoing staffing replacement, and should be reflected in the participant’s approved care plan.
